We recently hosted a visit from a group of participants in Swansea University’s METaL Project. Here’s a blog written by one of the group following their tour.
In Dec 2019 the METaL team and I visited DRB Group at their 6.5 acre Deeside Industrial Park site. We were welcomed by Julie Grant, Head of Customer Relations, Michael Halliday, Head of Engineering, and Josh Jenkins, Production Manager, who kindly spared their valuable time to showcase DRB Group’s capabilities. We were also pleased be introduced to CEO Matt Bennett, whose father David founded the company in 1976.
As an engineer myself it was wonderful to witness such a diverse range of capabilities at the DRB Group site, from their fabrication proficiencies to their reworking large dynamos, the company offer services to the rail and food industry as well as aerospace, pharmaceutical and many other sectors.
DRB Group pride themselves on providing a turnkey solution, service-maintenance and repair as well as supplying parts and bespoke solutions. All of which is made possible through their team of highly capable staff and excellent on-site facilities. This offering is clearly popular, the company have seen such increased demand in their services that their fabrication shop is now open 24 hours a day.
DRB Group have invested not just in ensuring the right equipment is available, but also that the right people are employed. They employ a 100-strong team who are experienced and trained to deliver the very best solutions to their vast client base. The company also have an active apprenticeship programme which is highly successful. Meeting with these staff was like breath of fresh air, each and every one we spoke with had a positive attitude to work, and were enthusiastic and knowledgeable in their field.
The company are incredibly proactive in Deeside, with staff taking part in STEM talks at local schools, arranging site tours to inspire next generation of engineers and supporting school entrepreneurs to mention a just a few of their outreach activities.
The Project METaL team and DRB Group representatives discussed work based learning opportunities and, where possible, research and development prospects. As part of the College of Engineering at Swansea University, the METaL Project looks forward to growing and developing the University’s relationship with DRB Group.
