We were recently approached by a client requiring our assistance with repairing a specialist fan which is used to remove insulation from copper cable.
The client is a North Wales based business and is a well-established metal recycler. They specialise in the buying and processing of all ferrous and non-ferrous metals, the de-pollution of vehicles and factory clearance and demolition.
A key part of their business is recycling large volumes of cable, and the fan unit which needed repairs is crucial to the process. As an integral piece of machinery, it was vital that the unit was back in full working order as soon as possible. A turnaround of 2-3 days was required and because of the expertise we have on-site we were able to accommodate this request.
To begin with the fan unit was cleaned and inspected, followed by NDT (non-destructive testing) in order to find any flaws such as cracks, porosity, laps, seams and other surface discontinuities.
We then carried out welding in-house where required, and supplied and fitted new bearings to the fan shaft. Once this was completed, we tested, inspected and overhauled the motor.
The next stage in the process was to dynamically balance the fan and shaft to G2.5. Dynamically balancing the fan is important to ensure the fan is functioning effectively and with minimum vibration. This is key to preventing future wear and tear which could be detrimental to the lifespan of various components.
Once this was carried out the fan unit was reassembled and tested again to ensure it was operating correctly.
